Regarding the Red (Umineko Full Series Spoilers)

  • Kanon cannot “die” or be “killed” or become a “victim.” When any of these things happen it is perfectly possible for him to return to “life.” Ergo, “dead” does not mean actual physical death and nothing can prove otherwise. Likewise a “corpse” is never defined as a biologically deceased body, as Erika is the first person to demand clarification about physical bodies in Dawn, suggesting that such a distinction is possible.
  • This is the world of 1967” refers to a flashback, not physical time travel. The present time is not 1967 when that is stated.
  • There are five, one for each servant” is inherently contradictory (there are four physical beings who are servants) unless reds can refer to Shannon and Kanon as distinct “roles” or “characters.” Likewise Shannon and Kanon being dead simultaneously at the beginning of Banquet cannot possibly be construed as two physical persons being biologically deceased, especially according to the orthodox solution where the body of neither is deceased.
  • The sin I am now demanding that you remember is not between Ushiromiya Battler and Beatrice” by necessity must distinguish Beatrice-as-role from the originator of that role.
  • “Acknowledging” Kinzo is not the same thing as physically seeing him or speaking with him. So words can utilize uncommon but still grammatically correct meanings. A character in a story or script can be “killed” but the actor playing them can remain alive.
  • Yet I am here, now, and will kill you” does not refer to physical presence. Therefore there is no way to distinguish in the red whether statements of fact are symbolic or strictly factual. Likewise it is impossible to determine when a red statement is universalizable (such as “Genji, Kumasawa, and Nanjo are not killers”) from the statement itself.
  • Statements like “Beato never committed murder for the sake of pleasure” do not by necessity imply that she ever actually did commit murder.
  • Battler is dead!!!” is factually untrue. The only possible way to resolve this problem is the same way to resolve the Kanon problem: “dead” doesn’t mean dead. Once that door is open, it’s open for everyone at any time the red is used.

There really isn’t a way to wriggle out of this mess. The red is a garbage trap that was always used by the witch side to misdirect. Battler told us so:

You can’t trust anything, you can’t trust any words that aren’t red…!!

Break this down into its component clauses and you’ll see what I mean.
