A Seasoned Veteran and a Sherlock-in-Training Try to Make Sense of Umineko No Naku Koro Ni

THE BEST SPRITE

This is going downhill very quickly. Rabbit soldier girls? More fight math? 18 years of envy? What is this all supposed to mean?
This was definitely one of the most interesting (and kind of humiliating) chapters to rewatch. There’s a whole bunch of information and allusion that took me ages to figure out that is just outright told to you here if you keep an eye out. To an extent I feel like this is a theme at this point, and really plays nicely in to the idea that things should be staring you in the face on a reread.

Nyeh see, what an exciting episode for the people! I’m sure nothing could go wrong in this chapter nihihi~

…I don’t know how important these damn rabbits are but they sure are entertaining to watch. And they really are cold and merciless, like a gun. It is a pleasure to voice such noble well-polished beings. :wahaha:

Next video is UP
We get to see the result of EVA’s next twilight, things get emotional, and then George takes ‘soul-searching’ too literally. How strange that none of these locked room murders seem to involve locks or rooms.

Ah yes, this is when things get really weird. A totally and completely non-magic character who we know and love… learns how to use magic? Very strange i would say. I do hope our detective is able to puzzle things out~

Another video! Today we see George go visit Shannon and absolutely nothing goes wrong.

Oh look we’ve upped our schedule! That’s fun~ I’m also quite happy to see some Beatrice VS Beatrice action, we’ve been waiting on this for a while! :wahaha:

The big finale for episode 3! I hope you’re all prepared for this nonsense. I certainly wasn’t.

The web of red is certainly really fun to look back on now that we’re so far through the story. As we’ve discussed recently in our recording sessions, Ryukishi’s riddles are, in essence, the answer. As impossible as a puzzle as this might seem, things like this narrow down the list of possibilities so far that if you can figure them out, they should provide what you need. We’ll have to see how that goes for me :ryukishi:

Jokrono’s new favourite girl has arrived :annoyed:

This chapter is incredibly long, and has some of the best scenes in the entire episode. The Web of Red is obviously a terrifying prospect, but I’d also like to shout out literally everything Beatrice does in this big finale. Protecting Jessica and Kanon with her floating beating Golden heart, denying magic itself in order to thwart Eva-Beatrice, and finally the reveal at the end that it was all a cunning ruse! THIS CHAPTER is why Beatrice is best girl, and of course contains the moment that revealed her true nature for me.

(Episode… 5 spoilers?) The moment when Beatrice struggles internally with keeping up her ‘act’ of for Battler at 2:29:00 was particularly telling for me, if we can accept that Beatrice is capable of ‘acting’ kindly, as the Sun, then we can also accept that Beatrice can ‘act’ coldly, as the moon wind. Even though I wasn’t so up to date as to say Beatrice had the same identity as the culprit, I felt that the game was challenging me not to doubt the previous scenes in Ep3, where we saw a certain side of Beatrice that is true and faithful to her own intentions.

Regarding the Ep5 thing; This, along with a few of the surrounding segments has been one of the most agonizing parts to edit thus far because there I was so proud of figuring out the ruse, of seeing through Beatrice’s North Wind and the Sun charade, but I also completely missed all of the craziness of Beatrice’s heart being sewn through, the grimace before she turned back to her old self; all of it was so significant to the truth and at first I was just all up on how it was a ruse. I think you’ll see this continue in to the next couple of videos as I become utterly tilted with a few aspects of the story that are pretty significant. The only reason I don’t call this the most agonizing part I’ve edited was because of a few moments in Episode 4 I’ve just edited. As much as rereading has helped me resolve this story pretty early, I really fell for the skip the whydunnit.

Same discussion I don’t know how well it comes through during the recording, but these scenes (particularly the sewn heart scene) I honestly felt pretty frustrated with you while reading them, myself knowing how important they were. I thought for sure that if you could figure out the other parts of the mystery then when we got to these scenes it would be obvious to you what was going on. It’s a complicated dance that Beatrice/Ryukishi orchestrates in the way that Beatrice ‘changes’ in Ep3 without… actually changing? She’s very different from the Beatrice we see in Ep 1-2 but she still wants to reach Battler out of love no matter what. Doubting her own intentions is part of the puzzle, and the solution as to her nature. And of course this is why she’s #BestGirl

Wow we should do a video on this SAME DISCUSSION

I think I can definitely hear your frustration with me as I’ve been editing; you poke and I go on some tangent about how this helps us solve this or that, or misleads us from this or that, but I never catch on to the matter at hand. The worst part to me about this component was that this was after we’d first discussed the idea that Episode 3 had a different author for the first time, and yet I somehow didn’t get what the implications of that might be. It’s been a long while but I seem to recall that my thought process was something along the lines of this is a different author’s interpretation of Beatrice, and thus this is further from the true Beatrice. This was also still at the point that I thought that Episode 1 was the ‘truth’ we were trying to solve, and I don’t think that was helping my train of thought there.

Ohyes, it is finally time for the appearance of the best girl… Angie!

angie

This is not quite Kairee level stuff, but I can’t help but think of Angie when you say Ange, as Ange’s name is pronounced a bit different in the PS3 voice acting.

For comparison, here’s Bernkastel saying Ange’s name in the episode 3 ???:

And here is Angie introducing herself in the English dub of Danganronpa V3:

(Don’t worry, I still love this playthrough~)

This Ange voice, 10/10

Yeah it’s pronounced closer to Enge than Angie. I mean, this is a name everyone pronounces differently so I’ll give them a pass :stuck_out_tongue:

And so we reach the end of Episode 3. Also I try on a new Ange voice, much to the disappointment of everyone who apparently loved the original one :ryukishi:

I blame Jokrono entirely for the voice change.

Also hey we’re off the island! This is fun~ I was totally blown away by this scene when I first read it, getting to see something outside of the gameboard is really… weird? The entire game seems to be set up to explore this one span of time and yet we’re being given an alternate perspective, from someone who wasn’t involved in the Rokkenjima massacre at all… Oh well. I’m sure Ryukishi knows what he’s doing and is laying hints left right and center for us :ryukishi:

Ange ftw :glug:
I like the new voice, it’s pretty on point! I wonder how she would sound in certain scenes in episode 4.

Can’t wait for the recap episodes, love them!

What a fun ride, witnessing the birth of theories and such :ryukishi:
Listening to you guys makes me appreciate Ryukishi’s writing so much more and regret that my main experience with Umineko was through manga, which I rushed through without much thinking. On the other hand, it’s manga that made me fall in love with the series, so maybe it’s okay. I feel that Umineko has so many layers and secrets that you can read it hundred times and each one will give you something new.
But I am rambling. Yeah, great episodes, extremely fun as always! My body is ready for episode 4.
