This is my favourite Youtube series right now.
But man, Battler sure rambles this episode. This chapter of the VN is definitely some of the biggest fat that deserved to be trimmed in future adaptations. He just keeps going on and on about stuff we already know and taking a million years to form the next logical conclusion.

The second half with battler spinning chessboards till he’s dizzy and talking to his dead parents was waaay too long. When we were recording this I kept thinking “this is when the chapter ends and battler resolves to fight the witch” but it just kept on going. At least we get Eva for some clever banter and Natsuhi gets her ‘big fucking gun’ moment.
Ep3 spoilers: One of the other things that bugs me is why we aren’t explicitly notified of the at least 3 other guns which are available to the remaining victims. If Ep3 is to be believed they’re just lying around but there’s no mention of them in this chapter. All it would really take is Natsuhi saying “I don’t trust you so no one else gets a gun” and then taking possession of the key to the gun room, wherever that is. Is it Kinzo’s room? I don’t actually recall.
EDIT: Also, I’m finding it interesting that Felix seems pretty suspicious of Doctor Nanjo but hasn’t tried explicitly to tie him into the murder (yet) i wonder what it would take for him to form a Nanjo culprit theory? Maybe it’s the dress, I imagine Nanjo in Beatrice’s dress wouldn’t be a pretty sight.
I love how he just kept trying to figure out what the heck Maria was saying the whole time.

Maria is nothing if not a confusingly verbose 9 year old. Sometimes (but not all the time).
For those interested, the magic circle shown here is the seventh pentacle of the Sun as laid out in the magic grimoire ‘the Key of Solomon’. I found a translator’s note on its exact function:
‘If any be by chance imprisoned or detained in fetters of iron, at the presence of this pentacle, which should be engraved in Gold on the day and hour of the Sun, he will be immediately delivered and set at liberty’
The other pentacles might be worth looking at.

My lord are Eva and Hideyoshi adorable.
Headcanon (spoilers for EP 7): At least one of Hideyoshi’s relatives who died in the war was killed on Rokkenjima during the fight over the gold.
Full series spoilers: Holy hell that moment at 35:30. If his instincts are leading him so far already then I cannot wait for later clues to be presented.

I absolutely loved recording this episode. We’ve gotten over the initial shock of the first twilight and get really into the conflict with the culprit. Eva and Hideyoshi’s tender moment together and Kanon’s monologue were scenes i had been waiting for for a while.
Oh boy that’s a lot of different spoilers to respond to I’m glad we provoked so many different trains of thought 
Ep7 spoilers I wouldn’t be surprised, I wonder if this is one of those ‘treasure chests’ Ryukishi keeps going on about?
full series spoilers this combined with his earlier joke about Shannon and Kanon being the same person leads me to believe he’ll figure it out by the end of Ep4. I just hope the misdirection isn’t too strong for him.
and finally, Ep4 spoilers Heck yes. Felix fully expects every named character so far to pop up at some point later… we better not disappoint also, he’s voicing her if I have anything to say about it.
Also, YES I had resolved that at that moment I absolutely must shout Beatrice’s true name as loud as possible. Damn did it feel good.

Oh I thought that was translated from something Ryukishi said, either way.
Yeah I’d like to just be shouting the entire time but a) that would destroy our mic levels and b) I would have to stop every five minutes to recover. I try to peak at scenes which I particularly care about.
Full series spoilers: I have absolute faith that he can easily solve it before Chiru if he plays his cards right. Which he has been doing.
And I can’t wait for EP 4. Heheh~.

Now that you’re both here, I’d just like to thank you both for recording this fun series and uploading it for our viewing pleasure. I’ve been meaning to reread Umineko for a while now, and this playthrough of yours gives me the perfect framework to do so. As someone who is familiar with the whole story, it is interesting to hear Jokrono’s thoughts on the various fun stuff that happens, especially since his analysis and intuition can be impressively sharp at times. The banter between you two is fun, and genuinely improves the experience for me. I’d much rather watch this playthrough than reread Umineko by myself.
So, once again, thank you for making this. It’s been a delight so far, and I’m sure it will continue to impress in the future.
