Introduce Yourself!

Hey guys,

My name is DMB or DeathMetalBurrito (that’s me DMB). Some of you might know me from Kazamatsuri, where I have been active for a while. It took me some time to join here due to technical issues, but I’m glad to finally join the forum.
For those of you who do not know me, I’m a 20 years old man from Canada who studies in biology, I’ll be starting University in september so wish me luck. :slightly_smiling:

When it comes to hobbies aside from anime/mangas/VNs, I love reading novels and video games. I read a lot of fantasy novels and am currently part of a low tier, professional DOTA2 team, nothing big but I’m still proud of it. When it comes to anime and mangas, I particularly love horror and trailers, such as another, Shinsekai Yori, Pupa, etc which explains my presence here. My favorite Visual novel is Saya no Uta, but I (obviously) love 07th works.

I’m especially invested in the manga version of his works, especially the Higurashi saga, which is without a doubt my favorite Manga series. I’m also a fan of Umineko, but I haven’t read the entire thing yet, but it hasn’t caught my attention as much as Higurashi did.

I’m really excited to finally join a forum where I can discuss about this passion of mine with other passionate readers, and hope we’ll have a nice time together on the forum.
よろしく おねがいします~

P.S. Welcome to all the newcomers who I haven’t met before, and nice to see you to everyone I DID met before

Hugo here, I’m 21, I hail from Texas, and I’m about to graduate university with an art degree. (Assuming everything goes as planned)

I was introduced to the works of 07th Expansion during my last year of high school by a bizarre series of coincidences. After seeing Mirai Nikki, I had become a little obsessed with the yandere trope, and as such I was always on the look-out for anything where they might appear. I first heard Rena’s “uso da!” on random youtube video, and on searching for it I was brought to a compilation video of every time that phrase appears in the Higurashi anime. I decided to watch the Higurashi anime after that, mistakenly believing that I knew exactly what I was getting myself into.

Although I was initially drawn in by the horror elements, Higurashi proved itself to be so much more than that. At the end of the first arc I found myself utterly baffled and wondering how the story could possibly continue, and when everything seemed to reset in the next episode, I was very intrigued. If I could go back in time I would tell myself to stop there and read the visual novel, but unfortunately I wasn’t aware of its existence at the time. Looking back, it’s kind of funny because it turned out that neither Mion nor Rena are actually yanderes.

After finishing the anime and watching all of the OVAs, I still wanted more - and when I found out that Higurashi was originally a visual novel, I rushed to get my hands on it and read it for myself. I spent my first year of college furiously reading through Higurashi, often staying up until 3 or 4 in the morning because I couldn’t put it down. Even though I already knew the answer to the mystery, the visual novels have so much more to them than the anime does. There were so many scenes that caught me off guard because they weren’t in the anime, and there are so many subtle clues and so much clever foreshadowing in the early arcs that I’m sure I would’ve completely missed if I’d come in blind. It was incredible experience, establishing Higurashi as my favorite popular media series.

Since then I’ve also read all of Umineko (after getting about halfway through the anime), and I’ve read the first night of Higanbana. Although I really enjoyed Umineko, it just wasn’t the same as Higurashi to me. I guess I’m a sucker for clarity and happy endings.

I have a pretty big collection of Higurashi mangas (I own all of the original 8 arcs as well as Beyond Midnight), as well as Sentai Filmwork’s new bluray release of the anime’s first season.

It’s been a couple of years now, and I’ve been meaning to go back and read everything again. Hopefully the steam releases will give me a chance to do this. I’ve already read the new Onikakushi-hen but I haven’t gotten around to Watanagashi-hen yet.

Sorry for the long introduction, but I hope to get along with everyone. I’ve never had much of a chance to talk about 07th Expansion’s works with other people before.

Welcome to the world of job searching! I won’t congratulate you, because that’s not something to be happy about. May God rest your soul. (/sarcasm. But seriously: best of luck job hunting! What kind of art are you doing, and what do you hope to do with it?)

Gotta love our dearest Yuno-chan. Enjoyed that a good deal.

That was my Umineko experience.

Anyway, welcome! Please participate; we’ll look forward to having you around

I’m doing painting, specifically portraits. For my senior exhibition I’m doing self-portraits. I work with acrylic paints and my portraits tend to be psychological and somewhat abstract. This probably isn’t the right topic for it, but I wouldn’t mind showing some examples if you’re interested!

Ehehe, thanks, I’ve heard it can be pretty tough. I have a plan though, and I have overprotective parents who will probably be paying for my living expenses for a while. I might also end up going to grad school too.

Yup, she’s the best yandere by far. She pretty much defines the term!

Also sorry if I should be splitting this reply into a different topic or something, I haven’t used a forum in a long time.

I’m from California and I came here mostly because the Kazamatsuri people led me here. So I haven’t actually read any 07th vns, only Key vns. However, I am open to conversion… Eventually. Basically I’m a total noob in this area but I want to expand my horizons. That is, when I actually have enough time and money to buy Higurashi on steam. But anyways nice to meet you guys but I might be stuck to lurking for a really long time.

I have some strong opinions but I’m mostly neutral to most stuff and often more interested in discussing than arguing.
That was my attitude when I first joined Kaza. Now I’m a little stronger in my opinions, although arguments are still not my forte. :stuck_out_tongue:

It reminded me why I got into Japan-related media back in the day, because it showed me great creativity and genius. Two qualities I continue to admire.
To me it was because my sister was watching it and it was funny, but nowadays I’m fully aware of the potential of video games, anime, light novels, manga and visual novels as storytelling mediums. Someday I hope to take advantage of this in my own way. ^^

I know the site because of Aspirety

Hello everyone! I’m happy to finally have a dedicated community to dive into 07th Expansion’s work with. Ryuukishi is my absolute favorite writer and one of my biggest influences.

My real name is Jason and I’m a 24 year old guy living in Canada. I’m a supervisor at Starbucks, where I worked all through university. Umineko, and to a lesser extent, Higurashi, have both had a huge impact on my life. Primarily through sending me on the path of studying Philosophy, of which I finished an undergraduate degree in last April.

(Spoilers for remarks about Higurashi and Umineko)
As many did, I watched Higurashi as a teenager back when it first aired and it really captured me, particularly when the first season ended and some lovely group of humans took it upon themselves the patch up the first chapter or two of Minagoroshi-hen. I must’ve read that section (our first taste of what we’d now call the ‘meta-world’) half a dozen times. Needless to say, I was incredibly interested when Umineko began and I followed the ups and downs of spoilers and patch releases as the series released. Of particular note is that EP3-EP6 was coming out around when I was in Gr.12 and first year University, where the series’ questions of reality and truth really came to the forefront and sent me hurdling towards a pursuing Philosophy (whereas I originally started in a Math degree). I used to chime in on the old Umineko Spoilers and Speculations thread at AnimeSuki once in awhile back in the day.

At this point Umineko has buried itself into who I am in such a profound way that it’s hard to really describe. From its narrative structure, explorations of ambiguity, focusing on understanding other people and other perspectives, questions of reality, metaphysics, metaphors; Umineko has a lot of depth. Not to mention it’s musical and thematic aesthetic has shaped my taste in music and narratives. It’s sparked a curiosity inside me that will probably never be extinguished and I owe that in small part due to the incredibly intricate nature of the work itself. One day I hope to become fluent in Japanese if only to express to Ryuukishi how much he’s impacted my life. A primary goal I have in life is to create some piece of art that reaches the level of depth I perceive Umineko to have achieved.
That said, beyond 07th Expansion itself (though everything is always connected), I have a deep interest in JRPGs and japanese media. In terms of graduate studies I hope to engage in some sort of media studies, to work on expanding our understanding of games as a narrative artform. Even in areas such as this, Umineko has been heavily influential (being a story about a game). I’m slowly working towards creating a framework to understand game narratives in terms of the underlying structure of action/character/time and the different representations which these things take place in (battle/exploration/menu, et cetera). I hope to eventually combine my philosophy thinking with game design to evolve RPG systems past the stagnant ideologies they’re still immersed in (where ‘mental’ phenomena is synonymous with ‘magic’ in most cases and ‘experience’ is reduced to swinging a sword). I think the answer lies in creating a system built around perception and values, moving away from the vestiges of mind/body dualism, but that’s a discussion for another time if people are interested (and thank you Beatrice for being such an interesting character to draw inspiration from).

As such, some other big influences or favourites of mine are game series such as Final Fantasy, Shin Megami Tensei (with particular focus on Devil Survivor and Persona) and Danganronpa or anime such as Evangelion, Death Parade, Madoka and Psycho-Pass. I’m generally a big fan of series in general (including horror movie series) and anything that has substance and aesthetic style. Music is a huge factor for me for any media I seek out, which itself draws its origins from my love for Umineko.

There’s always more to say, but I’ll leave it there for now. Nice to meet everybody and looking forward to building a great new community here.

Hi! My name is Jerilyn. I live in the South in the US (though I grew up in California). I’m in my early 20’s, and I’m looking to finish my second Associate Degree in Criminal Justice, and hopefully, I’ll find a local school I can afford to finish that degree. The road to it has been quite painful, with being a year behind due to my first adviser putting me in the wrong program for the first year, but I hope to do some sort of investigative work in the future. I found the link to the site through tumblr.

I first became interested in the WTC series because I went to San Diego Comic Con in 2008, and Yen Press had a magazine at their booth which featured the first chapter of Higurashi’s Onikakushi-hen, and I was hooked. I found out soon enough that Umineko existed (and End had only just come out) and with my high school friends, we grew obsessed with both series. I watched both series on YouTube (back before they really became copyright happy). I grew interested in the editing community for both series, and from there, some Facebook friends introduced me to a WTC RP forum they were in, and I made a lot of friends there, including somebody who was in the WTC editing community. I joined in the community, even participating in two of the Umineko Hells hosted on there, even winning an award for a vid based off one of the RPs we did, which was based on Leather Pants by CardGamesFTW (my YT account before it was deleted was IshtarOrochiEnvyL). I was in WTCTumblr2 until it eventually stopped being populated, and I generally avoid the fandom on tumblr except to participate in WTC Secret Santa (though honestly, I avoid most ransoms in general). I personally prefer Umineko’s characters and Higurashi’s story.

Outside of 07th Expansion works, I tend to stick to the outskirts of series to avoid rabid fans, but I like the Persona series, most of the Madoka Magica works other than Rebellion, Homura’s Revenge, Suzune, and Kazumi Magica, the Love Live series and game, the Danganronpa series, and a lot of other games. I like playing Pokemon, and I’ve just gotten to the fifth chapter in Steins;Gate. One series that I believe Nintendo did well in but won’t cash in on is Golden Sun. I’m gonna watch the new JoJo anime because a friend got me interested in the characters in that part, and I love the end theme.

I like when my friends tell me how they’re doing when they’re reading Umineko, and one of my friends and I spent a lot of time discussing the later games. Umineko and Higurashi captured my attention because I’ve loved mysteries since I was really young. I look forward to discussion with you all!

One series that I believe Nintendo did well in but won’t cash in on is Golden Sun.
Ah, Golden Sun. That game and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past were my childhood in a nutshell. I especially remember the music having a profound impact on me, as it made me the Sakuraba fan I am today. I do agree that Golden Sun doesn’t get a whole lot of attention, but the likeliness of another game in the series depends on whether or not Camelot wants to make RPGs again and stop making Mario Tennis games. :expressionless:

It’s been a long time since I’ve played Golden Sun, so maybe I should dust off my GBA soon and see if the cartridge still works…right after I play more Link to the Past and Metroid: Zero Mission.

It’s a pleasure to meet you!!

They did release the first of the Golden Suns and The Lost Age on Virtual Console on the WiiU, so it’s not completely forgotten. Just Sakurai having series bias for other RPGs. (Though Isaac as an Assist Trophy in Brawl and having remixed BGM from the games for custom stages was amazing.) I think Camelot could have been motivated to do another Golden Sun game to tie up the loose ends in Dark Dawn if a character like Isaac or his son Matthew had been put in Smash, since Smash is a good way to introduce different series to people and get them interested, but I’ll keep hoping for Golden Sun in the future. A Link to the Past was really good, too. It was my first Zelda game, and it helps that I’m left-handed like Link, so the story and protagonist pulled me in.

Sup guys, Yerian here, hailing from the midwest USA.

Im a migrant from Kazamatsuri, where I spend most of my time. And as of right now, I effectively know zero about 07th Expansion.

@Aspirety kinda dragged me here to join the Higurashi Tea Party. Im definitely interested, although, Im still mystified at how it could possibly be beneficial to purposefully wait 6 months in between each chapter. Would be kinda cool if someone could try to explain that to me without spoilers?

My avatar’s pretty boring right now… I wanted to use something 07th for this forum, but thats kinda a problem given my current situation… I’ll change it later I guess.

Outside of 07th:
(Obviously) Key
Im a huge VN fan
Im also kinda a Fate nut, even I dont talk about it as much.
I enjoy music (its one of my favorite aspects of VNs as a medium), especially piano and rock (let me know if you have any good recommendations).
Im self-studying Japanese. Havent dabbled in translation yet, but thats kinda my goal, and I am currently working as an editor on a fan-TL project for a VN no one here has probably ever heard of (I know I hadnt).

Anyways, nice to meet you all, old and new. Hopefully you’ll convince me to love 07th as much as you do~

Woah! Used to pursue a math degree and then went philosophy? Similar story to mine: I got a Bachelors in Applied Math and then went on to grad school for philosophy. Different degrees, I suppose, but at least we’re interested in the same fields. That’s awesome!

Hello, everyone! I’m Haruji-san, I’m a male in my early 20’s, and I’m born and raised in the US!
I began my adoration of Ryukishi07 thanks to the Higurashi anime. I have a long story with it that I’ll spare everyone (for now), but needless to say, I can say that it is my absolute favorite anime of all time, and has effectively changed my life. I defend it frequently from accusations of being “torture porn” and the like. I then went on to watch most of the Umineko anime. Despite how horrendous it is, I kinda have a soft spot for it. At the time, I had no idea how much of the story I was really missing. I then played through the entire first Episode, and that’s all I’ve done with it. I eventually grew sick of waiting for the ability to read it and did the unthinkable: I got on the wiki and read EVERYTHING. So yeah, I know the basic story and the solution and all that. When it comes out on Steam, I plan to buy and play each Episode.
I came across this just today, like, half an hour ago if that. Hehe! It was on a Steam discussion. I clicked the link, saw Aspirety’s name and was like, “HEY! He wrote that epic blog post about Umineko being more than a story!” And now here I am.
Aside from my beloved Higurashi, I’m an obsessive film buff with a terrifying tendency to ramble on about films that most people have probably never heard of. I love creating stories and would love to write some VNs, novels, and of course would LOVE to make some movies! My favorite anime, aside from Higurashi, would be Kanon, Clannad, Air, Soul Eater, and anything Studio Ghibli.
One thing about myself I’d like everyone to know is that I have Asperger’s Syndrome, so social interaction is… not easy. Here online, though, my many different quirks and issues probably won’t come up at all.
Thanks for your attention, and remember: Oyashiro-sama loves you!

Hi Everyone
You can call me Mii. I’m 23 y/o from Indonesia.
I know Ryukishi07 works from Higurashi Anime and then continue to watch Umineko. back then i only watched the anime since i’m lazy and not interested to read VN. Since Umineko anime didn’t give any good explanation i try to read the VN thankfully there’s PS3 version with good graphic and fully voiced. i read and completely in love (also obsessed) with this series. Thanks to Umineko i started to read Agatha Christie Novel.
My favorite is Obviously Umineko, Higurashi is my favorite too, i also excited about currently on going Hotarubi and Iwaihime.

Outside of 07th Expansion i’m big fan of Kancolle,Shuuen no Shiori, Evangelion and Dangan Ronpa franchise.

I found this Forum when i searched info about ‘Higurashi Live stage’ and apparently found kakeracomplex post about umineko and curiously click the latest post to find if he still talk about Umineko and then found link to Rokkenjima…
i always searched website who talk about 07thExpansion especially Umineko unfortunaly it’s always outdated, dead considering the VN already ended long time ago. in the end i talk and rambling about 07thExpansion by myself that’s why i’m glad i’ve found Rokkenjima. So… thank you for created this community.
My english is not really good and i may not post much but i like to read everyone discussion.

anyway…

Nice to meet you everyone! \ ( ^ ^ ) /

Heya gang!

The name’s hthxc. I live in south Texas, and although I would consider myself a fan, I’m still working through Ryukishi’s works. I played through all of Higurashi and Kai a few years ago during one of the most difficult times in my life thus far, and I think partially because of that it was a life-changing experience. Afterwards, I made the mistake of trying to go directly into Umineko, which burnt me out for a few years, but the new PS3 patch reignited my interest in the series and I’ve been working my way back through the first three episodes on Twitch as a few friends also watch (highly recommended that anyone who hasn’t played this yet does something similar, having a few friends to argue with about theories who are experiencing it at the same time as you is wonderful). Other than that, I’ve played a few chapters of Higanbana, and I definitely plan to check out Rose Guns Days as well, and Rewrite once I play through a few Key novels and get a feel for them.

Found this board through the good old visual novel subreddit. I kind of want to check out the site more thoroughly, but I’m still a bit skittish as I don’t want to run into spoilers while I’m in the middle of Umineko (the other day I got a huge spoiler while trying to find the original CD covers for the episodes! A CD cover!!!). I imagine my participation here will increase as I make my way closer to the end.
