News from 07th Live: WTC5 details and Umineko Hou?!

We were told to expect some news at 07th Live, but I don’t think anybody was expecting this! Numerous sources on Twitter are reporting what was spoken in an interview with Ryukishi at the event, including details in Haworthia and WTC5’s development, and that a new Umineko release is on the way! This first tweet is quoting Ryukishi saying how he plans to write more for Umineko, contrasting his earlier statement on how he’s "moved on from Hinamizawa". The second and third tweet are both reporting the same info: Ryukishi is planning on releasing a new Umineko game similar in structure to Higurashi Hou next summer. He mentions that it will include a brand new Episode taking place in Umineko Chiru (Answer Arcs). He also mentions how his recent Umineko writing in a “booklet” (First and Last Gift?) was a little bit gag-focused, so he’d like to do something more serious this time. They are still deciding on what to call the new game. Being based on Higurashi Hou, we can only assume it’s a complete collection of Umineko games for PC, so the main 8 Episodes + Tsubasa + Hane + an all new episode. Specifying that it’s set in Chiru seems to deny the possibility of it being the discarded ‘Land of the Golden Witch’, but now I’m all the more curious what it could be. I wonder if he’ll stick to the old engine or assets or base it more on the Steam release. We’ll let you know as soon as we know more! Secondly, we have this little bit of insight into Haworthia’s development and how it connects to the next When They Cry. According to the tweets, Ryukishi is currently 8000 characters into WTC5. He talks about his planning process as ‘plotting a tree’ of ideas, and that it’s been a process of gradually pruning the branches or leaves of the tree (different ideas), and that Haworthia was created based on many of the leaves he had to prune when finalising the concept of WTC5. Some of the folkish music used in Haworthia will be featured in WTC5; because it’s a big open world, even music such as this can fit the tone of the story, he says. Ryukishi invites listeners to form their own interpretations of how Haworthia might be connected to When They Cry 5. Lastly, he leaves us with a tease about the themes and setting of the new When They Cry. With WTC5, he wants to present a world where urban jungles and traditional architecture are mixed. Not sure whether we should interpret this as the imagery of a shrine in Tokyo surrounded by skyscrapers being thematically significant, or if it’s set in some kind of fantasy city, or if it’s a story set across multiple time periods; your guess is as good as mine. Now that’s a lot of exciting news to sink our teeth into! Keep in mind that these are second hand accounts and we shouldn’t take them as absolute truth, but the chances of these being fake are almost zero; at most there’s a small chance some of the details have been misreported, but I think the information is pretty reliable. Thanks to @umezawa_report and @kawatayuuhi for providing us this information, and to forumer [Bernkastelle] (https://forum.rokkenjima.org/u/Bernkastelle/summary) for helping me with translations. The future of 07th Expansion is looking bright!

Very interesting. It’s been a long wait, but I’m happy to see him still continuing Umineko for just a little longer, even after so long. I wonder how many new characters we might even see. If this releases before WTC5, could there also be a sort of teaser tying into it?

A fantasy world does come to my mind with that description. It also makes me think of a ghost town, where nature is reclaiming the land, and it sounds post-apocalyptic if that’s being applied to the world.

Well he didn’t say nature, just ‘traditional architecture’, so that doesn’t fully match.

He mentioned “urban jungle”, but now I’m realizing I misunderstood what that means, whoops.
I don’t know whether to love that we’re getting crumbs of information, or go mad from the suspense.

Hm maybe I should’ve written concrete jungle? I guess that makes more sense.

I cannot contain the emotional storm from hearing we might get some new Umineko content, seriously. It’s been so long and it felt like he only writes more for Higurashi since it sells better for the wider range, while the Umineko fans are thirsty for more.

If not Land, maybe it’s Trinity? Land was supposed to be EP3, but if I remember right, Trinity could be related to Chiru, I need to check it out again. I really hope it will be satisfying.
EP8 spoilers: Maybe he plans on putting Confessions of the Golden Witch in a novel version or repair EP8 to add it in? I hope it won’t be only that and we will get an actual new content.

Also about WTC5 and Haworthia, I’m still really confused, maybe because I don’t know much about Haworthia in general, I hope we will start translating it soon and add some light over it.

You think WTC5 will also be a catbox mystery? The whole traditional thing makes me think it’ll be more like Hinamizawa style rather than Rokkenjima style.

By being open world rather than another closed circle, it sounds less likely it will be that type of mystery for this one. But I also wouldn’t put it past him to ruse us and it turns out to be another one of those all along. :ryukishi:
I’m still looking forward to reading it.

It’s quite possible he’ll adapt some of the non-PC stories to PC, I’d be totally on board with that.
Also what’s Trinity…?

About Trinity (Umineko Hane):

Have you read Forgery no. XXX? It’s Black Battler’s forgery from Umineko Hane (although there’s a text version of this one as well, and it actually excludes few things from the novel version. During a conversation between Black Battler and Ronove, you have this part:

“After Land of the golden witch, I had the privilege to be at your side during Trinity of the golden witch. …No, if we consider that Lady Bernkastel’s gameboard is supposed to be the last…“

It means there’s a game called “Trinity” that happened somewhere between Land and Bern’s game that might been with Battler culprit. So it’s possible it’ll set in Chiru, maybe after EP5 after Battler frames himself as a possible culprit?

A friend and I started conspiracing about a witch dystophia where witches abandoned the board halfway so awkward things happen, which will be a cool explaintion for “fantasy stuff” to happen while still belonging to the WTC universe with the whole “meta witches” stuff, could be pretty cool.

I dig it! I’d be down for more witch hijinks, especially if it’s going to extend to an entire world. That’s the kind of thing I would love to read from him.

This is all too great to be true, I’m literally crying in joy, for real.

I’ll write more about my own speculations about it when I get home.

Btw, nice to see you as well aboard the Rokkenjima forums, @UmiNetta :wahaha:

I can’t believe we’re getting a new Umineko Episode; I’m a little torn about how to feel. On one hand, yee, more Umineko. On the other, do we really need MORE Umineko? Hrm. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Now I’m all excited about this!

To be quite honest, I just wonder if we’re getting our hopes too high as in “New Episode” or it’ll be more like a new Extra Tip(s?).
(In before Ryukishi trolling us with “Angel of 17 years” extra tip in a novel version.)

Either way, we didn’t get Tsubasa fully translated in the end, so maybe if there’ll be an arranged release like this, Steam or someone will make sure to officially translate Hane and Tsubasa as well (which weren’t translated by Witch-Hunt).

Nice to see you too @danpmss!! I abandoned my quiet stalking and joined in!

The new umineko episode thing does concern me, I dont believe the story needs any more added to it as its already damn long and Im personally more a fan of subtlety and letting the reader fill in spots in the story. I am however very much looking forward to what he comes up with for WTC5 to connect it to the series, I really cant wrap my head around the description of it we have so far, will be fun to keep speculating as more information sees the light of day.

Ok, I’m back. Let’s do like our old friend Jack the Ripper and split these into parts:

1- Umineko Hou

I’m assuming it is short story much like Higurashi’s Hou, that will either go with expanding the Kakera lore (I’m particularly interest in some more Lambda background), progress the Rokkenjima Prime plot somehow and show Ange and the other living characters’ life post-Epilogue (which is kinda just okay and I would feel like it would be a waste since the ending was just perfect and there’s no need for much else of it… Ikuko marrying Tohya would be a cool surprise though), and, for last but not least (at all), my favorite pick would be some more of the Adults past, be Kinzo’s, Genji’s, Hideyoshi’s, Nanjo’s or every single one of them really.

I would love to see Rudolph’s and Kyrie’s shady business, as much as I would love to see how Hideyoshi and Eva got together, Kinzo’s past with Genji (his actual waifu for life cofcof), and finally, I would love to see more information about Maria’s dad, which I always assumed to be the best link we could ever get to Higurashi (other than Meta Battler talking about it being a book in Rokkenjima Prime during EP1 or EP2 & Lambda implying she “blessed” both Takano and Yasu in Tsubasa or Hane, if I recall correctly).

I always assumed it had something to do with Rena’s dad moving to Hinamisawa (my headcanon would that HE is the disappeared person who left Rosa). That would be nice to have confirmed or denied too haha

Besides that, I would also try not to completely rule out Land and/or Trinity of the Golden Witch either (as they did have informations from EP5 as well in there from what I could gather… at least Land did, and Trinity comes after, so…).

2- Haworthia:

Didn’t read nor listened to any of the lyrics. I’m occupied quite a bit translating a bunch of other stuff and studying to death, but I could give you all a hand later with that, maybe (if I do I’ll report it to that thread about it).

3- WTC5

My expectations are the same as ever for now. The thing I’m the most curious about for now is just how long is it going to be (Every single Umineko EP have at least 16 hours worth of heavy-reading (and the biggest get this number to 30+ hours, which would be EP4). Quite escalated from what we initialy got from Higurashi except the final 2 Kai arcs. I wonder if it is going to be even longer than Umineko already is (which is probably the biggest VN ever, text-wise).

I, like some who stated that this was their reaction, don’t like the sound of a new Umineko game. I mean, the story’s already been told, why add more to it and especially eight years later… I feel like there’s nothing more that can even be added to it, in the meaning that, everything has been explained regarding the mysteries and whatnot, and to add something new, you must have given some foreshadowing or hinted at it. Like all the Umineko games, in which there was given a consiberable amount of clues that connects the mysteries of each Episode with one another. But, this new game, being released eight years later, thus judging by the time between the two, must be something Ryukishi has come up with after he had finished writing Umineko, so it may be difficult to associate it with the other games, as there’s no hinting towads it. It would just disturb the whole structure of Umineko I feel, that of a series that relies so much on foreshadowing and such.

Well, that’s what I think at least, maybe it was planned from the start, though like I said, the year gap doesn’t support that much. Well, something that has been hinted at that I can think of, and that wouldn’t disturb the structure and such, is maybe the explanation of the witches, their world and such. That may be cool. Other things that I can think of about what the new game might be about, are more message bottles, thus more scenarios that Yasu had planned regarding what would happen on the island, though I still haven’t finished Umineko, so I don’t know whether it was stated on how many message bottles by Yasu there are, and if it has been confirmed that there are only, uh, the number of bottles that appear throughout the series, that disproves my theory. Or maybe new forgeries written by Ikuko and Tohya? But, like with the message bottles, if they have been limited to a certain number, it’s improbable to happen. Well, none of these would count as new stories anyways, just an alternate retelling of what has already been told, so I’m wasting my time here.

As for the new information regarding When They Cry 5, it’s still too amorphous for me to say anything, to me it just looks like Ryukishi is describing the place in which the events will happen, so yeah.

Also, what was Higurashi Hou about, that may give me a clearer idea of what the new game might be like?

Author’s given the nod that the clues have been presented and the mystery can be solved. Get those guesses out before the reveal at the summer comiket.

Well, Higurashi Hou was released as a “thank you gift”. So I’m gathering, this might be the same for Umineko Hou. Higurashi Hou consists of three chapters,
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Outbreak
Hinamizawa Bus Stop
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kamikanshi-hen (God Shaming Chapter)

Personally, I enjoyed the God Shaming Arc the most since it gave us some more background history on Hanyuu.

I have zero expectations. Umineko is already done, so I’m not expecting anything crazy, but I’ll be happy with even a small sized episode. He said it is gonna be more serious, so I’m satisfied.

I am fairly optimistic that Mangagamer will pick up Tsubasa and Hane, and hopefully this new Episode as well!

It consists of all the 8 main arcs, all the Rei arcs, and those three additional arcs.
